On Writing
A few weeks ago I had to gather writing samples for an application and came to a dreadful realization. I had stopped writing. Everything that was longer than a page, everything that was a creative endeavour rather than an assignment, everything that I was proud of was dated 2008 or earlier. It’s shameful.
So, in addition to my reading challenge, I’m giving myself a writing challenge....

Currently Reading...
As part of my “Reading is Fundamental” challenge, I started to read The Stone Diaries by Carol Shields. I’ve read it before and enjoyed it so I thought I’d get through it quickly. But then I started to read the 16th Edition of the Chicago Manual of Style. It is so big. I’m reading it online right now until I gather the funds to buy my copy.
Let’s start keeping...

Walking by Faith
There have been some major changes in my life this year and I’m reaching a point where many things are out of my hands. For someone who likes to micro-manage and constantly be two steps ahead of life, this is a very stressful state.
So I cling to my faith. As I walked to the train station this morning I thought of the story of Gideon and his 300 soldiers.
The LORD said to Gideon, “You...

It's all about the money...
With the US economy in a bigger mess than usual, everyone is coming out of the woodwork to give their two cents. An Op-ed in the New York Times by Warren Buffett and letter sent out by Starbucks CEO, Howard Schultz are causing quite a stir.
What they are saying is not that interesting. Buffett is saying that the government should tax wealthy Americans more. Schultz is saying that CEOs should...

Reading is Fundamental
It has come to my attention that I know little to nothing about Canadian literature. This a problem considering I want a job in the Canadian publishing industry. I don’t want to restrict myself to Canadian publishing but I do plan to start here. Hence my challenge.
I am challenging myself to read at least 1 book per week for a year. The only rules are that the author be Canadian and I write...

E-Garage Sale!
So I’m cleaning my room (like really cleaning it, not just shoving everything in the closet) and I realize, “Damn, I have a lot of stuff!” Most of it I have used/worn in ages but I don’t have the heart to throw out because it’s still in great condition. Then I remembered how broke I was and I had an idea. What if… I sold my stuff!!! I know, it’s genius. By...

On Revolutions
Some are calling the riots in England a revolution. I’m not convinced.
In fact I think people throw the word revolution around much too casually. Burning cars and broken glass does not a revolution make. Yes, many (most?) revolutions are characterized by violence but they are defined by the quasi-irreversible nature of the change that follows. That is why, I believe, both the French...

Crap
I just did a quick budget and realized that I have enough money to last me part way through December. After that I will be - how should I put this? Broke as hell. Le sigh grande. Guess it’s time to find a side hustle…
